THE THIRD LEG

Third leg?! What happened to the second leg?!

Well technically THIS POST was the second leg… the Wolverine ride from Chicago to Detroit. I know I should have titled it so… sorry if I caused any confusion.

OK… as you can see from the picture above this third leg would not be on a train but by car. The weather report stated it would rain pretty much the entire time. We left Detroit about 10:30 AM. Kurt, Xan, Tommy and I managed to pack our things in the trunk and headed out.

Once again the scenery was wonderful an varied. as we drove through several states. It was time for lunch and we stopped at a “service mall”. I had never been to one before so this was all new to me. Basically, it’s a building housing gas stations and a food court. Pretty niifty, I must say.

However it was in the Pennsylvania area that the rain came down in torrents. Adding to the tension was the fact the car began hydroplaning. Not a good thing so Xan who was driving decided to slow down the speed to the mid 50s. Even this was tenuous at best.

Then, both phones in the car received storm alerts. In fact, part of the message advised “to seek shelter”. We finally pulled off the highway and decided to wait it out at Brookville PA. One of the things I noticed as we drove through Pennsylvania were how many towns had names with “ville” in it. Just thought I’d mention that.

It is a good thing we stopped when we did. As the others went into the convenience store I stayed outside to watch the clouds moving pretty fast in two different directions. Also, the rain was now falling sideways. I was also on the lookout for “fingers” in the sky. I did spot a couple but none touched down.

There was also this great sign in the convenience store that was worth taking a picture of.

When the storm subsided a bit we set off again. Though it was still coming down… at least we could now see wat was up ahead on the road. Also, Tommy took over driving detail.

By the time 8 PM came around… it was ttime for dinner. So we pulled over and stuffed our faces at a Cracker Barrel.

Our tummys full we continued east and got to Jersey City NJ by about 11:30 PM. It was a 12 hour ride… that was mostly wet… but we were glad to be in the the cozy shelter of Kurt’s home. Needless to say we all hit the sack pretty quick.
