who wears a beret at a baseball game in Detroit?

Apparently, I do. This particular one was a gift from my late friend, Randy. I think he would totally appreciate the humor of this. I’m going to change things up a bit. Get a little current then work backward to catch up on what I couldn’t post from the train. So, the picture on top was me at Tiger Stadium watching a game between the home team and the Mariners. How did all this come […]

THE FIRST LEG – Day 2 Part 3

AN HOUR BEFORE DENVER 4/24/2017  5:18 PM The train climbs and weaves in and out of tunnels. Some of the most dramatic vistas present themselves. The train riding high… and on the edge down below gorges that look like something out of some action thriller movie.   Then, out of one tunnel and you see this high plain spread out below. Scanning the horizon and through a distance mist you see an outcrop of blocks. […]

RUBY CANYON 4/24/2017 8:30 AM Just as we entered the canyon  the conductor announced that we were now in Colorado. This place is amazing! GLENWOOD SPRINGS 11:24 AM Conductor announced that there were  about 100 people coming aboard. Both Larry and I have gotten used to our respective “nest” each of us have created and are not thrilled about sharing space. Perhaps after over 24 hours riding so far our “grunge” might protect us from […]

THE FIRST LEG – Day 2 Part 1

4/24/2017 5:10 AM When I opened my eyes this morning the faint streaks of dawn were barely visible as the train slowly wormed it’s way through the Rockies. It would still be an hour and a half before coffee was available. The only thing to do was to look outside the window as the dawn grew brighter. But let’s backtrack a bit…. Our car was emptier by at least 50 passengers who  disembarked in Salt […]

RENO 4/23/2017 4:03 PM A majority of the older folk disembarked here.  (Another half load also did so in Truckee.) I was trying to upload my blog… but no wifi is to be had at this station. I was lucky to find a wifi signal in Sacramento… off the Capitol Corridor train that was parked across the track. I’ll try again in Denver but at this rate I’m not holding much hope for that. So […]

PAST SACRAMENTO 4/23/2017 12:30 PM About an hour outside of Sacramento the train started climbing… this meant a dramatic change in scenery. Pine trees, tunnels, tracks that curve, gold country and the snowy Sierra Nevadas. I’ll let the pictures do most of the talking here. The day is far from done. All continued on the next post to come.

THE FIRST LEG – Day 1, Part 1

4/23/2017  10:20 AM I’m on the California Zephyr heading to Chicago. The train pulled into Emeryville at 8:45 AM. There might be about 50 of us that boarded here. Folk with sleeper cars were up front… and us cheapskates (non-sleeper car types) boarded the cars in the middle and the back. Unlike the regular type train I usually take (Amtrak’s San Joaquin) the boarding took about 20 minutes. One would be lucky to go past […]

THE LAST CIGARETTE

4/23/2017 8:30 AM Here is a picture of it. Yes, I am taking the opportunity with this adventure to give up the habit. Heck, this journey is going to be 51 odd hours with no way to smoke… might as well make it the final stage of the detox, eh? Of course, I had to prep for it a week before the trip. I started to cut down my intake as well as consuming a […]

the Bon Voyage thing

There have been two. One on Friday when my friends, Pam & Petra came by salon. It did not start as one… but once the tacos came out and the champagne was popped… it essentially became one. Then last night in Berkeley I had dinner of Pakistani food (Indus Valley… between Hearst & University on San Pablo) with my friends Kim and Mike. It was a great evening of conversation while breaking bread. That sort […]

what do I pack in?

Posted Leave a comment

This question arose a few weeks ago. I checked out what was available at home and nothing seemed to fit the bill. This was a conundrum. It is a month-long trip and I am partial to traveling light. However, this is also a working vacation… meaning I will have to lug equipment on my journey. Now I had to figure out how to accomplish all this. Equipment was scaled back to what was absolutely essential. […]
