Da Count – crackers

Spread the love

dacountNo I’m not talking about some derogatory racial term. I’m talking about the edible kind that accompanies a bowl of soup or you spread butter or pate on before you gobble it up. I’m talking about a specific brand … Jacob’s.

Growing up I was one of those weird kids who didn’t have a sweet tooth. (Some would contend that I’m still weird.) My palate veered more toward the savory instead. (BTW I was also one of those weird kids who ate… and loved veges… just in case you have cranked the weird-meter on me.) So, If there was a spread of sweet biscuits (cookies) I was the one who would seek out the plate of plain crackers. When I was sick a bowl of crushed cream crackers with a dab of butter would instantly wipe the pout off my lips and replace it with a smile.

It was a simple pleasure I took for granted when I was growing up. When I first arrived on these shores I could only find saltines. Nothing wrong with those but I craved Jacob’s Cream Crackers. I went years without them since they were an English product and a hard to get item. I had resigned myself into believing that I may never find them ever again.

But of late the Asian supermarkets have been carrying them. Once again I can snack at midnight with a taste of my youth. (Yeah, spread a little butter… mmm… solace.) I have even shared this simple pleasure with some of my friends… and they like it… a lot. It is amazing how a simple pleasure can mean so much… especially when it has been absent in one’s life for so long.

So, my count today is reconnecting with a comfort snack from my youth. Excuse me while munch on one. Cheers!
