Da Count – personal archeology

Spread the love

dacount It’s the stuff you come across while digging for something else. In my case it was stuff that used to be in Mum’s room and has since been moved to the garage. I was going though some of the boxes and came across these 2 items from my past.

On the right is the first money saving receptacle (I’m loathe to call it a piggy bank because it’s not) that was given to me by my Dad. I was 6… I wanted a piggy bank… I got a Chinese bank… from the KL branch of the Hong Kong & Shanghai Bank no less. I wanted a clay piggy bank that I could crack open just like my favorite characters from those Beano & Dandy comics. Instead I got something that was made from durable hard plastic that is damn near impossible for a 6 year old to break. My Dad was a smart guy. Over the years I got over my initial 6 year old disappointment and learned to like it. Any kid can have a piggy bank… how many out there have a Chinese bank?

The item to the left is the dagger… er… scout knife that I got at the world scout jamboree in Norway when I was 16. In case you have read the Wikipedia post that has been linked… we were encamped at the Trelleborg site and I did meet the then Crown Prince of Morocco (yeah… he is the King now) in fact, we exchanged holiday cards for years. There were some other fun crazy exploits… but perhaps I’ll leave that for another post.

Finding these jolted my memory in a good way and made me smile… that’s always something to count. Below are pictures for your closer inspection.
