I’ve been meaning to…

Really, I have.

Oft used phrase, eh? We all use it, don’t we? Probably more often than we like. Because we use it more than actually getting to it we are faced with a mountain of tasks that we more often walk away from because it overwhelms and intimidates. Ah, the self-conundrums we create.

Yeah, I have a “to-do” list longer than the Nile. Although over the last 2 months I’ve been surely chipping away at. All this in an attempt to replace each nagging “I’ve been meaning to…” with a simple and affirmative, simple and elegant “done”.

For instance, this morning I’m organizing data. To that end I have 3 external hard-drives hooked up and whirring away as I consolidate files of various sorts. Are you brimming with excitement yet? Yeah, neither am I. Partly because I’ve been at it since 2 AM.

It has to get done. Why? To make my life easier, of course. At least that’s what I keep telling myself.

But this is far from the only thing that I’ve been entrenched in doing of late. There’s been more… mostly on the home improvement front. And there’s yet more to go. (It never ends, does it?)

The problem with the tasks set aside for another time is that invariably there is always more work involved. For instance, one of these ongoing projects is to create a space set up exclusively for video editing. (You can read that as building an office in my garage.) This involved clearing the shed in the back to store everything that until now was stored in the garage. Simple, right?

Well, while clearing the shed it was discovered that the floor of said shed needed to be replaced. So that was accomplished by ripping out the old rotted plywood and utilizing paving stones for a replacement floor. That mission was accomplished last week. Cool, right?

But as the garage was cleared out a discovery was made. No, not treasure… but a rodent tunnel system… under the brick floor. So, that’s being dealt with at the moment as it poses a structural issue that just can’t be ignored. This puts back the actual build of the office back by a week and probably will necessitate adding a sub-floor as part of it.

Yay. Can you tell I’m having fun yet? OK, all this is not exactly fun but with each and every “done” that occurs there is a definite and growing sense of accomplishment that follows… and less emotional baggage to drag along.

There is a due date for all of this to be completed… and that’s the end of this year. (Hey, goals are important, yo!)

So, once completed… it will all be good…. until the next “I’ve been meaning to…” mountain rises.
