we are better than this

Although recent events might be a strong argument against the title statement of this posting. Yesterday’s events alone – a plane loaded with 298 civilians killed via a botched battle point scoring – the murderous back and forth in the Gaza region –  the ongoing border crisis with over 50 thousand children facing ugliness… can easily turn one toward a stagnant cynicism.

It is easy… too easy to slide down that slope. What do we do? Do we rant and rave via social media that ultimately leads to pointless arguing? Do we pretend that all of this is “too far away” and just “get on with it while wearing a blind eye”?

Perhaps we have played those two options for far too long.

“But crap happens all the time… and has since the beginning of time.” History has shown us that.

Tis true. But the opposite is also true. The human animal has also aspired and attained wonderful and great things… together and on our own. History has shown us that as well.

That’s where I think we should begin… on our own. Our own Human Activism… as in active decency. We need to realize that our actions have a ripple effect. Just like the negative ones the positive ones do make a difference.

It is us… collectively… who create the Zeitgeist. The present one that encompasses the “sit back and point blame game” has not served us well. And this only seeps to the top.

Talking about it isn’t enough. This is about doing. Taking an active part and reconnecting to the better parts of our human-ness… and doing it dynamically.

We can start via acts of kindness or compassion to ourselves and to each other. It is within our power to stop the blame game. Because how far has that really gotten us? We can take it further if we so chose by offering and volunteering creative solutions. The possibilities are limitless.

Sure, we can cynically say that this is but a drop in a desert. That this is not going to solve this complex geopolitical mess we are currently mired in. No, it is not. Human conflict will always be a constant but we can certainly work towards tempering it down.

We have to start somewhere. It is either that or continue living in the despair and desolation represented in the picture above.

And that somewhere is us… and through actions. Start by consciously being kind to someone everyday and build from that.

If enough of us are being dynamically decent… it might just shift the collective consciousness. Many drops can make things grow.
