online viewing

Some of you are already aware that I more often than not do a lot of my TV viewing online. Firstly, because I don’t watch that much TV and secondly because the few programs that I may want to watch are usually inconveniently timed against my personal schedule.

This is also traditionally the period of the year when I try to catch some of the newer shows to see if there is on or two I want to follow. The verdict on that is still out. Generally, the new shows are kinda, eh. Though the reason I’m writing this is to give a short impression of how online interface is set up for viewing.

The 4 major broadcast networks all now have “full screen HD” viewing capability. This is a big change from what was available last year. Although in this mode FOX is the only one that doesn’t provide controls… such as the ability to pause. Yes, one is still subjected to commercials but they are mostly of the “limited” variety… meaning you get one commercial (often of the “exclusive” variety) between the breaks. I can live with this. The only network interface that irritates me is ABC’s that requires the viewer to sit within mouse reach to continue watching the episode after each episode… because there is a “click here to continue” button. (Come on guys… get with the program here. Most folks want to put it on and sit back and watch. Having to click a button to continue really breaks the flow.) Anyway, that’s my short review for what it’s worth. (not much, huh?)

Speaking of which… if the election was based on a show like “Last Comic Standing” who do you think would be the winner? This was taped at the Alfred P Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner last Thursday. First up… Mr. McCain… then Mr. Obama. Each runs about 15 minutes.
