so, after writing my post yesterday…

Spread the love

… about life just being a continuum, etc… a friend visits and starts complaining about how it sucks getting old. (And he’s only 2 years older than I am.) I politely listen but am half chuckling, half screaming in my head. The chuckling part – “Complaining about it isn’t gonna make you younger.” The screaming part – “Complaining about it isn’t gonna make you younger!”

Frankly, I know too many people who complain about it. Truth be told… I’m really tired hearing about it. Commiserating is one thing…

” I’ve got a leaky bladder and a backache when I wake in the morning. What do you have? “

” I’ve got a backache too… but usually when I go to sleep. Hey, I’ll up your leaky bladder with hair growing out of my ears.”

But complaining about it is futile. We are all getting older. It’s part and parcel of this deal called life that we signed on to in the first place. Yeah, all those things we use to be able to do at a crack of a whip may take a little longer now. We are not as spry as we used to be… but who is?

It doesn’t mean that the glory days are done. There is a lot more living to do. More lessons to learn. More beauty to create. More people to meet. More mischief to make. More laughs to be had. More delights to experience. More love to give.

Granted, how we do all this now is probably going to be a little different from how we used to. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. But do it you still can. The operative active phrase is to “do it”. (Yeah, the Nike people were on to something.)

If all you choose to do is complain about getting old… you have decided that your life has come to a standstill. And remember… that too is a choice.
