Da Count – the swirl of sound

Attentive Listening

No, it’s not a post about music… not in the conventional sense. In a status update yesterday I posted that I spend at least 10 minutes a day listening to the sounds of my neighbourhood. It’s true… I do.

I think I always have. This was probably inspired by my Dad. During the times when he was bed ridden he could describe everything happening outside the window. And when it did it almost seemed like a movie. That was when the idea of life as a symphony was first introduced to me.

It was later in life when I was struck by the notion that every place had it’s own “tune” so to speak. There are variations from day to day. Maybe it is a siren or a lawn mower.

For instance in the mornings where I live I can hear the sounds of various critters. Birds, dogs, squirrels and the odd opossum sauntering across the fence in the back. Mixed into this are the sound of trains, cars, buses while the neighbours roll out the garbage cans for pick-up. The “normal” sounds.

But normal song that sings to us varies from place to place. So, the “tunes” are different. It is part of the character of the place and adds a richness to it’s profile. It informs what the area is all about… crooning the life that bustles there.

I chose to it as my count because it provides yet another element to story to my life… and one we often take for granted.
