sometimes it is not about theatre

This was a link/status update I posted on Facebook today. Click it to read the story.

I think Victor’s actions were heroic. I do think he needs to be applauded. OK… now that’s out of the way…

My reaction to the story and subsequent reaction to it on Facebook was motivated by the observation that more often than not we create theatre “to honor” such an act to make ourselves feel good. In this case… being honored by City Hall/Governor/Fresno State game. Sure, the story reports that even individuals are writing checks, etc. There is no crime in that. Individuals who do incredible acts should be recognized. I just take issue with the fact (and often probability) that it stops there.

I just think the bigger thanks would be to help Victor find a job. What better pride can he feel than being able to support his family? How about fulfilling that very real need that he has? I just think that would be the bigger and more meaningful (and practical) thanks we as a community can give him rather than any theatre of thanks where we whoop and cheer for a few moments.
