public distractions

I’ve never been a fan of TVs in bars. The exception to the rule being “sports bars”. That,  I can understand… even if I’m not a sports fan myself I get the point of TVs in a sports bar. It’s a place you gather with your friends to throw back some beers while watching a televised game… and all the shenanigans associated with that type of social engagement. It’s for that very reason… social engagement… …

I found a nickle…

… this very nickle on one of my morning walks this weekend. i usually find pennies. Not too often… every once in a while. But this weekend it was a nickle. Will this equate to 5 times more luck? Sure, I’ve found pennies in the past. None of them have brought me the luck that I designated to them. Not one. “This means I will get that gig!” or “This will finally mean (fill in …

It struck me the other day…

… as I was reading first person accounts of the Bersih 3.0 rally how essay writing has always been a big part of primary and secondary education in Malaysia. Seriously, check out some of the stories there. By the time we were in form 3 (8th grade here in the US) a 2000 – 5000 word essay assignment was the norm. And as evidenced by the stories at the link you can see that this …

I make no apologies…

… that chances are pretty good I’ll be watching Kate & Will’s wedding. (I wrote that like I know them on a first name basis.) I make no apologies that on occasion I do enjoy some pomp and circumstance. Yes, this will be a whole lot of that and more. This from a country (England) where they have over a thousand year tradition of pomp and circumstance… along with intrigue and murder along the way. …

sometimes it is not about theatre

This was a link/status update I posted on Facebook today. Click it to read the story. I think Victor’s actions were heroic. I do think he needs to be applauded. OK… now that’s out of the way… My reaction to the story and subsequent reaction to it on Facebook was motivated by the observation that more often than not we create theatre “to honor” such an act to make ourselves feel good. In this case… …

the walk

It is something I started (actually, re-started) over the weekend. And I’ve continued. Fine, 5 days is not exactly a great track record but I’m still doing it, aren’t I? It is also true that some days I begin later in the morning than others. The point being… I’m still doing it. That should count for something. Everyday the route changes. I like variety. Everyday I add a little more distance. It feels good. Sure, …

the BS quotient

Last night just before I drifted off an old topic of interest drifted into my mind scurrying away the images of my favorite dishes. (Yes, if you must know, I do think about food… a lot.)  This morning I recalled that I did write about this in a previous post. Here is an excerpt: … it got me contemplating the “BS factor”. We all have a quotient of it… or at least remnants of one …

I am awkward during holidays

Tis true. I am. It wasn’t always that way and I’m not entirely sure when this (me being awkward) actually began. But are you not awkward most times anyway? Yeah… sure… but I’m talking about holidays in this post. Try to keep focus, will ya? Anyway, this much I know… it wasn’t always that way… at least, not back in Malaysia. I loved holidays and Malaysia still has one of the highest number of public …

imagination gone wild

I was chatting with a friend the other day and he was telling me how he nearly went crazy when he couldn’t find his 5 year old daughter a couple of months ago. Turns out she was hiding under the bed in a game of “hide and seek” but neglected to inform him that he was “it”… or there was even a game going on.  He rattled off the many possible scenarios that flashed through …
