gingko raiding and a busy week

On occasion, during my morning walks I’ve been known to pilfer the leaves off any Gingko tree that I happen to come across. (Truth be told… I’ve scoped out where every one is located in my hood.) Only 20 or 30 on each “raid”… nothing too dramatic. I don’t do it every day and there is no sad trail of bald gingko trees in my neighborhood or anything like that.  In fact, doing so actually …

The (natural) Drug Cartel

That is the group I started on Facebook yesterday. The intent is to share recipes and remedies from plants, fruits, etc that are readily available around us. I freely admit that part of the inspiration was based on recently watching James Wong’s BBC series “Grow Your Own Drugs”.  I like his approach simply because as an ethnobotanist he puts the science into what is often referred to as “an old wives tale”.  BTW some episodes …

Da Count – living… in my hood

A friend asked me yesterday what I have been up to because I’ve been somewhat AWOL socially of late. I think my answer was something like “getting stuff done at the homestead”. Then, last night as I slid off into slumber, it struck me that my answer was really incomplete. Yes, I have been doing stuff around the house but to a great extent I have also been re-embracing the neighborhood I live in. I …

my spiffy bike

And here it is! I got this beauty at one of the block sales this year. It’s a Drake and from what I can gather is from the 40’s or the 50’s. When I got it it was in need of some TLC – the chain was fused, rust, and the old tires were cracking. With help from my friend Steve I started “phase 1” about a month ago (along with 2 other bikes that …

rogue terms (for HNT too)

HNT Update: OK… I posted this today… but decided to include it in HNT. Why? There is a half-nekkid person on the post… plus, HNT was part of the Rogue Fest in 2006 as a Gallery entry… so why the heck not?! Cheers and Happy HNT! BTW… the piece of art is by Mr. Reza Assemi. ORIGINAL ENTRY! The muse for the 2011 fest was unveiled a few days ago. Here it is. Are you …

“like fest” in da Big NO… or… Freslike

The flurry of “liking” began Sunday on Facebook. For a couple of days Salt Lake City took the lead in this campaign. A million bucks goes to the winning community towards feeding the hungry here. Yes, I participated in the “like fest” to get our number one ranking back… and I don’t apologize for it. I even posted a bare assed picture of me on my profile at one point to garner more votes. There …

Da Count – FUSE Fest – GO!

My count this week (a day late, I know) is the FRESNO F.U.S.E. FEST. Even if I didn’t have friends involved, this is the kind of DIY grassroot event that any community can be proud of… and that is a HUGE count in my book. So, if you live in and around da Big NO… GO… you’ll be glad you did. Click the graphic to go directly to the festival site! CLICK HERE to read …

places and events we don’t go to…

… just because we live right there. I once remarked to a friend, “If you live in Fresno… visit Forestiere Underground Garden, the Veteran’s Legion Of Valor Museum and actually go on an Ag Tour… you can officially be granted “out-of-towner” status.” I’ve done 2 out of the three… so, I’m close. Although I’ve never been on an “official” ag tour (which I hear mostly originates in the LA or Bay areas) I have been …
